The devices, also available as software for installation on the server of choice, will carry the company’s flagship VPN-1 brand, and will sit alongside existing low-end home and branch office devices from the company.

VPN-1 UTM and VPN-1 UTM Power, which has a higher throughput capacity, have starting prices $799 and $3,500 respectively. Appliance OEMs include existing partners Crossbeam, Nokia and IBM.

Check Point has not really talked up its UTM capabilities in the past. UTM is a term coined a couple years back by IDC that, unlike many three-letter acronyms in the industry, seems like it has stuck, so Check Point is buying in.

The IDC definition of UTM includes intrusion prevention, firewall/VPN and anti-virus. Check Point’s antivirus is provided by CA Inc. The devices also include SSL VPN and web application firewall features, Check Point said.

The company has previously launched small office UTM boxes under its SofaWare brand, and devices targeted at branch offices under the VPN-1 Edge brand.
