Sales in September were $18.4 billion, up 1% on the previous month, and up 27.4% on the year.

The rise came in the last month of a quarter which was dogged by concerns over inventories and which led some vendors to lower their forecasts for the period.

Sales for the quarter as a whole were $55.2 billion, up 3.2%b on the second quarter, and up 27.4% on the year.

The trade group said the figures still reflected continued growth in chip demand. Sales of PCs and cell phones were stronger than expected it said, driving sales of DSP, flash and DRAM. Overall, the September growth rate was towards the lower end of the historic range, it said, due to inventory corrections in specific sectors.

Sales in the Americas were $3.32 billion, down 1.7% sequentially but up 20.6% on the year. In Europe, sales were $3.35 billion, up 4.1% sequentially and 23.4% on the year.
