General Christian Brachet, head of IT for the French police force, said Firefox was more secure, reliable and compatible with other state services and departments.
He praised the W3C standard, citing its global compatibility and ability to function equally well under all major operating systems.
General Brachet went on to postulate a time when citizens would be able to directly report a crime to the police online, an idea, he explained, that was far more plausible under Firefox.
The police force is also planning to switch from Microsoft Outlook to Mozilla’s Thunderbird email client.
The conversion is expected to be completed by the end of the year and marks even further gains for the browser, which has now achieved an 18% market penetration in France, according to XiTi Monitor.
