The new multi-level cell NOR flash memory boasts Intel’s latest version of its StrataFlash Cellular Memory, or M18, which becomes the first to be built on Intel’s 90-nanometer chip fabrication process. The result is faster performance, higher density and lower power consumption than 130-nanometer versions, Intel said.

The M18 enables what Intel claims are the fastest read speeds, enabling up to 133MHz bus frequency speeds. The M18 also consumer one-third the energy of previous versions, Intel said.

The chips are suitable for color screen smartphones and handhelds that support Internet access and wireless video, according to Intel.

The Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker said it was working with major chipset vendors, including Philips and Infineon, as well as OS vendors, including Symbian, to get their products ready for its M18 line.
