The company said it is seeing renewed interest in PKI, driven primarily by government initiatives such as HSPD-12, the US policy that sets the tone for a common identification standard for federal employees and contractors.

Wide variations exist in public organizations in the quality and security of the forms of identification that are used to gain access to secure facilities. The US government dictates that the ID methods used are not only strongly resistant to identity fraud, tampering, and counterfeiting, but also can be rapidly authenticated electronically. IDs have to be issued only by providers whose reliability has been established by an official accreditation process. PKI is an ideal candidate, against those criteria.

Cygnacom Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Entrust, will operate the Certification Authority that supports the managed PKI service, which the vendor claims is designed to meet US Federal Common policy and standards requirements.
