WLAN security company caught by Trapeze

Trapeze has been working with Newbury Networks on a product integration strategy

By Jason Stamper

Consolidation in the enterprise wireless LAN sector continues with wireless switch supplier Trapeze Networks announcing it is to buy the WLAN location security specialist of Newbury Networks.

Trapeze was an OEM of Newbury Networks technology and the two companies say they have been working together for some time on a product integration strategy.

Newbury has developed a location services appliance of which Trapeze already sells a version. “This combined organisation provides a growing market with proven wireless-LAN solutions and location applications to securely link people, assets and information,” said Michael Maggio, CEO for Newbury.

The companies did not disclose the size of the transaction, but have confirmed that Newbury will remain an independent business unit, employing 16 people at its Boston headquarters.

Newbury’s location technology provides so-called security fingerprinting which stops wireless applications being accessed, using location data to identify and possibly block potential network attackers.

Trapeze itself was acquired, earlier this year by Missouri-based Belden in a cash deal worth around $130 million.

The parent company is expected to continue building a portfolio of WLAN products alongside its cabling, cable management, and connectivity products.
