The 100-year-old City University has over 23,830 students from 156 countries, studying business, health, law, computing, engineering, journalism and the arts. Founded in 1894 as the Northampton Institute on its present site in London, the institute was awarded full university status in 1966.

Nortel and its partner Redstone Converged Solutions deployed a new LAN with Power over Ethernet, single sign on for user authentication, quality of service and a single management system to monitor and control the network.

Carl Stokes, director of IT operations and infrastructure at City University, said: With our new LAN in place, we are now planning to implement wireless capabilities across the campuses and investigating the possibility of introducing video applications.

The university expects the new LAN to meet the increasing network demands of its students as well as prevent unauthenticated plugging of devices into the network.

Mario DiMascio, vice president for UK enterprise sales at Nortel, said: We were able to help City University find a balance between enabling student desire to be hyperconnected and protecting the security and integrity of the university’s network.
