New York-based smart glasses maker Vuzix has received $24m in funding from Intel.

The latest investment will help accelerate the launch of Vuzix’s next generation Net-connected glasses into the market.

As part of the deal, Intel acquired 49,626 preferred Vuzix shares, bringing its overall stake in Vuzix to 30%.

Vuzix said in a statement: "The right to vote with the holders of Common Stock on an as-converted basis, and has the right to appoint two members to Vuzix’ Board of Directors, in addition to the company’s current five members."

For professionals, the wearable device will feature hands-free capabilities for field technology, assistance for customer service agents, and patient data access for on-the-go doctors.

In addition, the gadget will come with virtual reality and video capabilities for entertainment purposes.

The US chipmaker has also joined hands with Italian eyewear brand Luxottica in December to integrate fuse premium, luxury and sports eyewear with smart technology, in addition to developing wearable devices with retailer Fossil and fashion brand Opening Ceremony.

Intel is also delivering chips to power the next generation of Google’s Google Glass.
