The Foundation’s web site closed down earlier this week, and yesterday group co-founder Sam Riser said in a blog posting that it is indeed winding down.
People have wondered why I haven’t blogged about the Foundation closing, he wrote. It is. And I haven’t said anything here because corporate housekeeping takes a little time: board votes, blah blah blah.
Last month, the Foundation said it was withdrawing its support for the OpenDocument Format, and would instead back the Compound Document Format, which falls under the auspices of the World Wide Web Consortium.
The group now takes the position that CDF is best suited as a universal document format.
The Foundation started falling out of love with ODF when it decided that ODF proponent Sun Microsystems was more interested in providing app-level compatibility between Microsoft Office and its own OpenOffice and StarOffice than it was with format-level compatibility.
