The target operation has 700 employees providing a range of network, data center, security and hosting services across 15 countries, and operates in both the commercial and government sectors. Comsat is headquartered in McLean, Virginia but owns domestic networks in all major Latin American markets, and also in Central America.

Comsat International is a division of CI Holding, which bought the unit in 2002 from US federal and defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. Comsat had gross assets of $145m at the end of 2005. The price of the deal was not disclosed, although it was reported to be around 100m pounds ($200m).

M&A activity has been at the heart of BT Global Services in the last three years, with the company swooping for US network services firm Infonet, Italian company Albacomp, and former Reuters venture Radianz. The company said in 2006 that it plans to more than double its revenue in the US, Japan, India and China to over 1.5bn euros ($1.9bn) in the next three years.
