The new box is called the DS3300, and will ship next month with list prices beginning at $5,000. The single and dual-controller DS3000 devices are fundamentally LSI boxes, as they are based on controllers and software OEM’ed from LSI, which brands its own arrays powered by the same technology as Simplicity devices.
Naturally enough IBM said it will pitch the Ethernet-friendly DS3300 at small customers that have outgrown internal or direct-attached storage, and need to move to SAN storage, but do not have the technical skills, staff or desire to build an FC SAN. The DS3300 will ship with Simplicity installation software.
Internally the Simplicity and DS3000 arrays run SAS or serial-attached 3.5in SCSI drives. As with other boxes in the series, the DS3300 will scale to 14TB raw capacity across 48 300GB drives.
