IBM is planning to open a new Open IT Innovation Center by the end of next year that will double up as a data center for Iberdrola and also provide software design, development, and maintenance services for IBM’s Spanish and Portuguese customers.

The center will be located Iberdrola’s Salamanca utility and will initially staff 100 workers. It will help Iberdrola to boost its internal IT projects using new IBM technologies and best practices.

The total investment will be spread over 10 years.

Iberdrola is a privately held producer of wind energy that operates in 40 countries worldwide. The company has pledged to invest around 200m euros in IT research development and innovation projects over the next two years. It has also set up a network to facilitate the sharing of innovative IT ideas with partners.

IBM and Iberdrola signed the agreement last month.
