The MD300 is a compact device similar to a USB memory stick. It is a mobile broadband modem that plugs into any standard USB port. With its built-in Microsoft Windows software and drivers, the card is capable of installing and configuring on its own when plugged into a workstation. Mac drivers are available for download.
The MD300 is equipped with a Wireless Manager interface that provides instant access to PlayNow, Sony Ericsson’s mobile download service.
The MD300 combines high data download speeds with simple installation and configuration, making it the ideal choice for busy professionals who demand no-compromise connectivity said Johan Tysklind, marketing director of mobile computing at Sony Ericsson.
The MD300 provides internet access on HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE or GPRS networks worldwide. The device comes with accessories including a desk stand and USB extension cable.
The company plans to launch the MD300 modem cards in black and metallic silver variants in selected markets from the first quarter of 2008. Around the same time, Sony Ericsson has plans to launch its walkman phones based on UMTS/ Wi-Fi and HSDPA technologies. The W380 will be based on UMTS/ Wi-Fi technologies and the W890 will be based on HSDPA technology.
Sierra Wireless has also announced plans to launch a USB mobile modem, the Apex 880, which is expected to be available for shipping in January 2008.
