The data includes information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and some health information on service members, their family members and others. The data was being processed for SAIC’s contracts to support TRICARE, which provides health care to the military. According to a company statement, the incident involved data on an unsecured SAIC server that was sent over the Internet in unencrypted form.
The company is in the process of notifying some 580,000 households about the incident. So far its own internal review has found no proof of a data breach, SAIC said.
SAIC has hired Kroll to handle response and support services for any of the affected individuals. The company said it will take a pre-tax hit of between $7m and $9m for the current quarter to provide these services.
