The Indiana State Police’s (ISP) commercial vehicle division monitors compliance with federal motor carrier safety and hazardous material regulations for all commercial vehicles and buses driven within the state of Indiana. Homeland security has been added to the division’s responsibilities amid growing concerns for the potential of commercial vehicles and buses being used in terrorist acts.
By implementing BIO-key’s mobile product for the law enforcement community, ISP officers in the commercial vehicle division will have immediate access to a wide variety of state and federal databases, including Safetynet, the ISP statewide fitness rating database.
Safetynet data will enable ISP officers to verify that commercial vehicles are operated safely and legally. Additionally, BIO-key’s MobileCop technology will provide secure communications and the ability to share data with other units within the ISP.
Providing officers in all divisions with mobile data communication capabilities serves as a force multiplier, said Ken Souza, general manager of BIO-key’s law enforcement group. Consequently, all of ISP’s on-duty units in other divisions can see the activities of officers outside their division, enabling them to assist fellow officers if needed.
