Alcatel-Lucent has acquired OpenPlug, a software provider specialised in mobile telephony that commercialises under the ELIPS name a range of patented technologies that facilitate the development of mobile phones, smartphones and the applications that run on them.
Alcatel-Lucent said that with the acquisition it can extend OpenPlug’s functionality to service providers, enterprises and developers, which enables them create and deploy applications across multiple mobile devices and within service provider app stores.
The company said that the move advances its application enablement strategy, which is focused on combining the network capabilities of service providers with speed and innovation of web to provide a richer end-user experience.
Alcatel-Lucent plans to incorporate OpenPlug toolset into the company’s developer platform and Open API service.
OpenPlug CEO Eric Baissus said that by combining the company’s ELIPS Suite and ELIPS Studio technologies with Alcatel-Lucent’s platforms and API services, it enables developers and service providers to gather all these pieces which will facilitate deployment and monetisation of new generation of applications that the market is expecting.
This is the second acquisition Alcatel-Lucent has made over the past three months to expand and enhance the application ecosystem.
In June, the company acquired ProgrammableWeb, the technology industry’s go-to source of API-related content.
