With Tom Cruise involved, it’s more life imitating B-movies than imitating art, but Oracle’s reason for backing out of a high-profile film placement deal is quite spectacular.

According to the Financial Times, Oracle asked Hollywood to scrap all mention of its brand in the spy thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit after Edward Snowden’s leaks about the NSA.

Citing sources close to the matter, the FT reported that Oracle had originally penned a big-money deal to feature prominently in the action film about international espionage.

But Snowden’s leaks about America’s own spy agency allegedly prompted Oracle to request all its branding was removed from the film – but it couldn’t recoup the money it spent.
