Tech giant Oracle is set to channel the agility of a startup, with the software company forming a new unit dedicated to the development of new technologies like virtual reality and AI.
The startup play by Oracle is designed to attract talent and sharpen the tech giant’s competive edge against rivals, with the new unit revealed in a series of job postings on Oracle’s website. The new startup unit will include two new centres in Virginia and Denver which will be dedicated to ‘cutting-edge products.’ 50 or so jobs are on offer, revealed in jobs ads which were posted earlier this month for the Solution Enginerering Centers.
“The mission of the organization and these two centers is to build and engineer cutting-edge solutions for our customers around cloud computing, big data analytics, mobile computing, internet of things, cybersecurity,” the company said. Oracle also said in the posting that artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality will also be areas of potential investment.
Oracle is currently embroiled in a cloud war with rivals such as Microsoft and Salesforce, with the latter two companies heavily investing in technologies beyond their traditional software products. With the new unit, Oracle seems to be looking to inject new ideas and innovations to improve the company’s position in the current cloud wars.

In a statement, Hamza Jahangir, vice president, Cloud Platform Sales Engineering, said: “We are building the Oracle Solution Engineering Centers where engineers and technologists will develop next generation cloud-based solutions to help customers become more digital and transition to the cloud.”
According to the job postings, Oracle is looking for candidates who have extensive experience in cloud and with rival cloud platforms like AWS and Salesforce. Candidates may have to work with customers and sales team members on activities like delivering cloud workshops.
