A new app incoming for smartphones and Google Glass says you’ll be able to take a photo of a stranger, and then find out who they are.
The app uses facial recognition software to scan a bazillion images on the Internet – mostly ones uploaded to social networking websites to see if it can find a match.
It’s called NameTag, and is developed by a company called FacialNetwork. It says that the app will also scan the 450,000 entries on the National Sex Offender Registry and other criminal databases.
Disregarding the blatant privacy concerns that this app will bring (if it ever gets approved), NameTag looks just downright horrifying. This could be abused in so many ways; it’s pretty much a stalking app or a paedophile hunter.
However, NameTag’s creator Kevin Alan Tussy, says: "I believe that this will make online dating and offline social interactions much safer and give us a far better understanding of the people around us.
"It’s much easier to meet interesting new people when we can simply look at someone, see their Facebook, review their LinkedIn page or maybe even see their dating site profile. Often we were interacting with people blindly or not interacting at all. NameTag on Google Glass can change all that."
Goodbye privacy. Imagine some stalker wearing Google Glass just looks at you and instantly finds out who you are via your Twitter selfie. AGH.
