RTF, Rich Text Format, is a document file format designed to store documents.

It can carry out functions such as separating control information from plain text as well as collecting then inserting text into a document.

In continuing development by Microsoft from 1987 to 2008, several versions of the format have been released with the most recent being 1.9.1 from March 2008. Richard Brodie, the original creator of Microsoft, Charles Simonyi and David Luebbert are the individuals responsible for RTF as their efforts saw the first RTF being developed for Microsoft Word 3.0 in 1987 through Macintosh.
