A thumbnail can be either an image or a video which has been scaled down in size to a reduced version of the original. Thumbnails help with organisation when identifying a certain image or video within a large collection.

Visual search engines use thumbnails so that a process of searching or scrolling can be undertaken in order to find a certain thumbnail. Google Images is a prominent example of a search engine where thumbnails can be found.

By clicking on the thumbnail link, a user can access either the image in its full capacity, or the website where the image is located in order to provide context to it.

Flickr is another site which uses thumbnails that are a maximum of 240 pixels long in dimension.
