A thumbnail can be either an image or a video which has been scaled down in size to a reduced version of the original. Thumbnails help with organisation when identifying a certain image or video within a large collection.
Visual search engines use thumbnails so that a process of searching or scrolling can be undertaken in order to find a certain thumbnail. Google Images is a prominent example of a search engine where thumbnails can be found.
