UK software company Sage has been hit by a data breach, with 'unauthorised access' potentially compromising the personal information for employees at 280 UK businesses.

The data breach is currently shrouded in uncertainty, but it is believed that the breach originated from someone using an ‘internal’ company computer login. It remains unclear whether the compromised data has been stolen or simply viewed.

Police are currently investigating the breach, with the FTSE-listed company also probing the ‘unauthorised access.’ The payroll and accounting software firm, which boasts an annual turnover of £1.3bn and is the only remaining tech stock on the FTSE 100, has contacted businesses whose data may have been compromised and told them to watch out for any unusual activity.

A statement on the company’s website confirmed the data breach and tried to reassure customers that the data breach only concerned a small group of UK customers. Sage said:  “We believe there has been some unauthorised access using an internal login to the data of a small number of our UK customers so we are working closely with the authorities to investigate the situation.

“Our customers are always our first priority so we are communicating directly with those who may be affected and giving guidance on measures they can take to protect their security.”
