Written in PHP, Joomla is billed as one of the world’s most popular software packages used to build, manage and publish content for website0. The company claims that more than 3% of the web runs on Joomla with a CMS market share of more than 9%.
As an open-source platform, the Joomla CMS is led by an international community of more than half a million active contributors, expanding and developing extensions such as plugins, templates and modules.
What does the word ‘Joomla’ actually mean?
Joomla can be charted back to 2005, when it was established as a result of a fork in Mambo. Mambo was a free and open source CMS when developers took part of its source code and started independent development on it – this is what is referred to as a ‘fork’. This fork caused huge controversy in the open source commuinity, with many debating over the definition of ‘open source’.
The name Joomla! is the anglicised spelling of jumla, a swahili word meaning ‘all together’ or ‘as a whole.’
