Although sales of software for Hewlett-Packard Co’s proprietary MPE-based HP 3000 system are getting harder, independent software vendor Orbit Software (UK) Ltd, in Leatherhead, Surrey, is still seeing new sites installed, says its managing director R L Goodway: A lot of people with HP 3000s don’t see the opportunity to go to the 9000; Unix doesn’t handle transactions like the 3000 can, Goodway said at last week’s Hewlett-Packard User Conference in Birmingham – People are not deserting the 3000 by the thousands; there are 200,000 copies of TurboImage out there; you don’t throw away that kind of investment; I think Hewlett has given up trying to bury the HP 3000 and has decided that it has a future.
