Boxborough, Massachusetts-based Xyplex Inc reckons it has the first printer server that enables NetWare, VAX/VMS, and Unix users to share the same printers on an Ethernet: the 1450 Printer Server connects to the network via 10Base-T and up to four printers can connect to the rear of the 1450 via its two parallel and two serial ports; once it is configured with Xyplex Printer Server software, print jobs can be sent to the 1450 as if it were another service on the network; it is claimed to offer aggregate throughput of up to 50,000 bytes per second, depending on the type of printer attached to the parallel ports; the serial ports operate up to 38.4Kbps; it comes with 1Mb RAM, expandable to 3Mb and software can be remotely loaded from a network-based host or another Xyplex server; it also has an IC Card interface and can be upgraded to a self-loader by buying a card and plugging it into the slot – it takes both Flash Memory and One-Time-Programmable cards; it supports IPX for communicating with NetWare systems, TCP/IP for communicating with Unix and other systems that support TCP/IP, and Digital Equipment Corp’s LAT for communicating with VMS systems; it costs $2,200, now.
