A two-chip set combining the functions of a facsimile board, an answering machine and a modem was unveiled yesterday by Fremont, California-based Cirrus Logic Inc. Called the CL-MD1424 Communicator Intelligent Data/Fax/Voice Modem Device Set, it is claimed to be the smallest and least power-hungry such implementation on the market and is aimed at notebook computers. The modem is a 2,400bps Hayes-compatible device, the Group III fax feature is rated at 14.4Kbps and the answering feature can and then replay spoken messages either through a standard telephone set or via the small speaker typically found in a notebook computer. It samples in first quarter 1992 at $45 for 1,000-up.
