The UK computer trade press is up in arms over Microsoft Corp’s plans to charge for the support of its Windows NT operating system. In the UK, buyers get only 30 days free telephone support for desktop NT, and will then have to fork out a minimum of UKP3,000 a year. The Advanced Server edition comes with no free support, and it costs up to UKP10,000 for support from Microsoft. Digital Equipment Corp says it will extend the 30 days free period to a year for Alpha versions of NT, and third parties are likely to take up the baton from Microsoft, which admits it doesn’t have the necessary core competencies.
