The emerging CDDI standard for transmitting data using Fibre Distributed Data Interface protocols over copper cable was demonstrated by 13 companies that came together in Boston this week for the interoperability trial. The aim was to show that high-bandwidth 100Mbps transmission is possible over unshielded twisted pair using the emerging ANSI standard. Participating were 3Com Corp, Cabletron Systems Inc, Codenoll Technology Corp, Crescendo Communications Inc, Digital Equipment Corp, Interphase Corp, Micro Linear Corp, Motorola Data Communications, Network Peripherals Inc, Pulse Engineering, Inc, Silicon Graphics Inc, SynOptics Communications Inc and Technitrol Inc. The local network demonstration included transceivers, hubs, concentrators, and personal computer and workstation adaptors interoperating over Category 5 wire, the cabling medium said to have the fastest rate of installation growth. The computers were linked via twisted pair for hubs and concentrators on a fibre optic backbone.
