Novell and Intel have collaborated to push Moblin, for Intel Atom processor-based netbooks and other mobile systems.
Moblin is an optimized open source Linux software stack and technology framework that is expected to deliver visually rich Internet and media experiences on Intel Atom Processor-based devices including MIDs, netbooks/nettops, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), and embedded systems.
Novell said it will create a Moblin-based product for netbooks to a range of OEMs and ODMs. It will also set up Novell Open Labs in Taiwan to encourage the adoption of Moblin and will work with the Taiwan Moblin Enabling Center, MEC, a joint effort between Intel and the Taiwan Institute for Information Industry, to validate designs for Moblin compliance.
Doug Fisher, vice president of software and services group and general manager of its system software division at Intel, said: Novell has taken a significant leadership role in the Moblin community since joining the effort late last year. The combination of Intel Atom processor-based platforms and Moblin-based Novell software will provide even more opportunities for OEMs, ODMs, and the broader Moblin community to deliver excellent mobile internet solutions.
