Rather than put them into its German manufacturing plant, Commodore International Ltd is transferring manufacture of its Amiga home computer for the entire European market to the Irvine, Scotland plant of Huntsville, Alabama-based contract manufacturer SCI Systems Inc. The machines are presently made in Hong Kong, which is regarded as too far from the European market. SCI Systems has been contracted to build about 200,000 Amiga 600s by the end of the year, creating additional jobs at its Scottish plant, which at present employs 750 people. The machines will be manufactured from scratch using SCI’s surface mount facilities. Commodore reckons that UKP100m will be spent on Amiga computers in the UK alone this year.
