Having conquered America and much of Europe, Electronic Data Systems Corp has turned its sights on increasing its presence in Japan, and has paid $27m for a 19.9% stake in Japan Systems Ltd, a broadly-based software house that is a reseller of Fujitsu Ltd’s small business computers, and has strong links with the local government market. The General Motors Corp subsidiary becomes the largest outside investor in Japan Systems and gets one seat on the board. Japan Systems hopes to benefit from the Dallas company’s experience in the systems integration market. This fiscal it expects to do turnover of $43m, dramatically worse than the $103m it had forecast, which explains why it had been looking for a partner. There is already a wholly-owned Electronic Data Systems Japan subsidiary in Tokyo, but hopes to benefit from the tie-up by gaining better access to Japan Systems customers.
