L M Ericsson Telefon AB has considerably enhanced its position in Japan by winning a contract to develop and install a cellular system to the Japan Digital Cellular standard for Tokyo. The contract was promised by Tokyo Digital Phone Co Ltd, a consortium including Japan Telecom Ltd, Pacific Telesis Group Inc, East Japan Railway, Metrophone Service and Cable & Wireless Ltd. The initial contract will be signed in the spring, after Tokyo Digital has received its operators licence from the Ministry of Post & Telecommunications; it will operate at 1.5GHz. Development will be done in Sweden and Japan, with a Japanese partner.
