In a new effort to wrest a share of the flat-panel display market back from Japan Inc, the Microelectronics & Computer Technology Corp in Austin, Texas is getting together with Taunton, Massachusetts-based Kopin Corp to create the American Scaled-Electronics Consortium. Kopin’s wafer-engineering technology will be used to fabricate a large-area, active-matrix, flat-panel display with on-board drivers and logic for use in products such as notebook computers. The project technology is broadly applicable to the fabrication of high-density electronic circuit arrays, Kopin says. The three-year development project, one of 27 chosen for funding out of 270 proposals submitted, will receive about $2.8m from the Advanced Technology Programme that is operated by the US Department of Commerce.
