Hewlett-Packard Co has announced some new print facilities for its X Window implementation that scale fonts dynamically using Agfa Compugraphic’s Intellifont technology built into its HP LaserJet III family of printers. Users running X Window applications on Hewlett Apollo workstations now have WYSIWYG print functionality – formerly it was only possible to print using fixed-size fonts that bore little resemblance to the printer fonts. Hewlett will supply 12 typefaces with Apollo workstations corresponding to those built into HP LaserJet III printers – although there are some 1,800 available in Intellifont-compatible format. The scalable-typeface technology will be included free with Hewlett’s HP-UX or Domain Unix operating systems.
