Oki Electric Industry Co has announced two new models in its if486VX series of 80486-based personal computers, the desktop if486VX5320D and the deskside if486VX550D; both models are based on a 66MHz 80486DX2 chip. The new models fit into the Oki Frameware open systems framework. The two models run Japanese MS-Windows 3.0A and Japanese MS-OS/2 V1.21 and have four EISA bus slots. The VX530D model has 4Mb memory standard, expandable up to 40Mb, plus 100Mb hard disk, while the VX550D model has the same main memory configuration with space for up to 1.3Gb of hard disk and other configurable disk options, such as magneto-optical disks. Prices run from $13,500 for the basic 530D model to $15,700, with shipments from the end of November. Oki also released the ifPEN30, a Japanese pen-input computer, based on the 3.3V 20MHz Intel Corp 80386SL chip – Oki claims this is the first application of this low-power chip in Japan. The units can use both Windows for Pen Computing from Microsoft and the PenPoint operating system from Go Corp. It is provided with a standard PCMCIA/JEIDA card slot for various cards for applications such as communications and local network control, for use in portable office and mobile business applications. The unit incorporates a 40Mb hard disk, an AT bus board, battery life of two hours between charges, and has dimensions of 11.7 by 8.8 by 1.4 and it weighs 2 lbs 3 oz. The basic unit costs $4,000 and it will be available from December.
