South Korean officials report that country’s semiconductor exports rose to $2,800m for the first five months of this year, up from $2,700m a year earlier: global demand for semiconductors is soaring, outpacing supply in line with improvements in computer and electronics industries, they told Reuter – from January to May, semiconductor assembly exports totalled $1,210m, accounting for 43% of the total, down from $1,610m in the same period of last year; the ministry predicts that exports will rise to $7,200m in 1993 from $6,800m a year ago; and despite those rather silly – no, very silly – US anti-dumping duties imposed on South Korean chipmakers ranging from 0.82% to 11.45% in April, memory chip exports soared to $1,400m from January to May compared with $923m a year earlier.
