Catalyst Semiconductor Inc of Santa Clara, California, has announced a 5V CMOS 512K-bit Flash erasable and electrically re-programmable memory, which it says is suitable for systems requiring on-board code updates: the memory is divided into 32 sectors of 2K-bytes each, and the CAT28F512V5 has a Sector Erase facility which enables the user to erase any one or all of the 2K-byte sectors; the memory has an access time of 200nS with a programming speed of 100 microseconds per byte; it is pin-compatible with EPROM devices and programming and erase are performed through an operation and verify algorithm; the instructions are input via the input output bus using a two-write cycle scheme, and the address and data are latched to free input output and address bus during write operation; it costs $59.74 in 1,000-piece quantities.
