In Tokyo, Oki Electric Industry Co Ltd, which is already working on embedded verisions of Hewlett-Packard Co’s Precision Architecture RISC, has signed a new agreement with the Cupertino company for bilateral cooperation, the idea being to combine Hewlett-Packard computer hardware and software with Oki telecommunications products, initially for the Japanese market; Oki says that it will buy $80m of Precision Architecture computers and peripherals over the next three years; Oki plans to license software and hardware systems development tools from Hewlett and will adopt HP 9000 Series 800 business servers, HP Apollo Series 700 workstations and the HP-UX operating system in its systems-integration business focused on the information systems and telecommunications areas and will sell the kit for use in banking, hotel automation, local government systems and facilities management and also plans to use the computers as network managers.
