Dissatisfied at the rate at which it has been eating into British Telecommunications Plc’s telephony monopoly, Mercury Communications Ltd announced yesterday that it plans to bypass British Telecom and link directly to subscribers via a radio local loop. We have made a definite decision to go ahead with radio local loop. It’s just a question of which technology, Mercury chief executive Mike Harris said at the announcement of Cable & Wireless Plc’s figures (see page 4). He said Mercury is looking at four technologies, all developed in the US, two of which are in use; it may end up using different technologies in different places. Mercury would then have to apply for a licence to use the frequencies.
