The RS/6000 vastly outperformed the best guesses of industry watchers last year, and IBM shipped 25,000 of the things by the end of the year, workstation chief Bill Filip told the Wall Street Journal. He said that the RS/6000, including peripherals and software, generated over $1,000m of business for IBM against estimates of between $500m and $600m. Filip said that 10,000 were shipped in December alone, and the only question is whether the machines have actually reached end users or whether they are cluttering up dealers’ shelves and warehouses. Daniel Mandresh at Merrill Lynch & Co now reckons the RS/6000 will do $3,000m this year.
