ARTISOFT SIGNS DEAL WITH MOUNTAIN NETWORK ON LOCAL NETWORK BACK-UP

By CBR Staff Writer

Artisoft Inc, Tucson, Arizona, has an agreement with Mountain Network Solutions Inc under which the two will jointly develop a back-up and recovery system for LANtastic networks. The first release, a software-only product that the company says is compatible with SCSI tape drives, is to cost UKP247, while a software-hardware bundle drive will also be launched this autumn at UKP510; the family is to be called ArtiSave Backup. The company says that for MS-DOS and Windows users, the software can be run on any server to back up the drive. This back-up can either be selective, on a file-by-file basis, or automatic. Features are said to include automatic installation, automatic scheduling of back-up events, and simultaneous back-up of the server while users are on the network. There is also to be a version bundling the software with Mountain’s SideCar II 305Mb portable back-up drive. Separately, Artisoft announced an agreement with Atlanta, Georgia-based VisiSoft Inc for joint development of a network management software package for LANtastic networks. The product is scheduled for release by the end of the year, and Artisoft says that it will incorporate real-time monitoring, inventory management, report capability, and administrative security features. VisiSoft already markets a network management package called VisiNet, which is compatible with LANtastic, but the new agreement centres on the product’s NetBIOS technology.
