Openwave Systems has unveiled a new version of Openwave Email Mx, an extensible e-mail platform that is built upon distributed database and distributed storage technologies and enables usage of low-cost storage hardware for message store.

The company claims that the new version of Email Mx can be expanded to provide general-purpose, low-cost storage for other applications beyound email, offering a low TCO platform for messaging products.

Openwave Email Mx Stateless Edition pre-integrated server components are compatible with other products from Openwave’s Messaging suite including Rich Mail.

According to Openwave, the Email Mx Stateless edition includes enhancements such as, enabling reduction in CAPEX through the use of commodity storage hardware and a license-free distributed database with built-in high availability and reliability features; and increased reliability via the Stateless Message and Content Store Architecture.

In addition, the new version employes N+1 active/active scalability and failover instead of 2N active/standby, reducing the hardware required to maintain redundancy, Openwave said.

Chris Moore, director of product management, messaging applications at Openwave said: “Email is still one of the most popular internet applications and since the 2004 introduction of email offerings with nearly limitless storage, consumers expectations about email have changed.

“Email Mx Stateless Edition enables service providers to offer mail boxes with limitless storage capacity at a significantly lower cost than allowed by currently available solutions. The improved reliability and ability to grow incrementally will help service providers build a solid messaging and media experience.”
