nismo

In the latest Smartwatch development, car manufacturer Nissan has entered the competition with a smartwatch designed specifically for drivers of the Nissan Nismo car.

The idea is that the watch will connect the driver to the car and provide them with real-time biometric data.

Gareth Dunsmore, Marketing Communications General Manager, Nissan in Europe, commented: "Wearable technology is fast becoming the next big thing and we want to take advantage of this innovative technology to make our Nismo Brand more accessible. On track, Nissan uses the latest biometric training technologies to improve the performance of our Nissan Nismo Athletes and it is this technology we want to bring to our fans to enhance their driving experience and Nismo ownership."

The watch will allow drivers to monitor the efficiency of their vehicle with average speed and fuel consumption readings, capture biometric data via a heart rate monitor, and yes, like Nathan Pearce from F5 predicted, the watch will receive tailored car messages from Nissan. Adverts beamed at you whilst driving? Sounds dangerous, Nissan.

This is surely the most niche smartwatch we have yet to see, and all the applications seem a bit pointless at the moment unless you are a racing driver. But with access to biometrics, it could be developed for some interesting uses. Perhaps sensing your body temperature to adjust the car heating suitably, or even keyless entry to the car and keyless ignition.

As Nissan has said though, this technology is still being developed, mostly. And unless you own a Nismo car this watch will be incredibly uselss to you. What it does do is however is showcase some exciting future technology, stuff that could hopefully be implemented into all smartwatches and cars in the near future. It just doesn’t have anything on the Pebble or Samsung’s Galaxy Gearjust yet.
