Motorola Inc is proposing a single standard for connecting cellular switches with cellular base stations in a move that it claims will encourage competition in the pan-American cellular market. Motorola claims the support of Northern Telecom Ltd, DSC Communications Corp and Tandem Computers Inc in its initiative. The recommendation has been submitted for consideration to the US Telecommunications Industry Association. The recommended standard is dubbed the A+ Interface and is a development of the A Interface deployed by a number of the world’s leading switch and cell site vendors. The company says that the cellular arms of all the Baby Bells plus Sprint Corp either support its initiative or agreed to test it.
