In what appears to be its first major victory anywhere in the world, Windows NT has bounced IBM Corp’s OS/2 out of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The Commonwealth Bank had been one of the world’s largest OS/2 networks with about 6,000 workstations, and when that deal was announced, Bill Gates was in Sydney to claim it as the biggest customer for OS/2 in the world. It appears that the bank was impressed by Microsoft Corp rather than the operating system and decided to follow the Redmond company wherever it went. The bank’s assistant general manager of information services, Brian Morris told the Australian Financial Review that Windows NT has been the least cost option for us. Microsoft went to great lengths to secure the victory, making the bank its first site worldwide to have the operating system for beta testing. The bank plans to start the migration in 1995.
