Compression Labs Inc, headquartered in San Jose, California, has announced SpectrumSaver, a digital broadcast television system for business television, distance learning and satellite news gathering applications: based on Compressed Digital Video technology, which digitises and compresses broadcast television signals, SpectrumSaver digitises and compresses a full-motion analogue television signal so it can be transmitted via satellite in 2MHz of bandwidth; SpectrumSaver provides up to a dozen channels per transponder, depending on network parameters; it costs $2,600 and encoders are $85,000 each and include a companion Dolby DP85 digital stereo system; a PALPhased Alternate Line version of SpectrumSaver will ship in 1992.
