Sun Microsystems Inc has popped yet another new company, Billerica, Massachusetts-based SunSelect, dedicated to integrating personal computing resources in Unix-based client-server environments. SunSelect offers three primary product lines: the PC-NFS MS-DOS version of Network File System; a new SunPC line of personal computer emulation products to enable Sparc workstation users to run MS-DOS and MS-Windows applications; and NetWare SunLink, which connects Novell Inc NetWare networks to Sparcserver systems. The new SunPC product line is claimed to enable Sparc workstation users run personal computer applications at performance levels comparable with an 80386 or 80486 processor. There is a SunPC software emulator that enables workstation users torun MS-DOS and Windows applications; a SunPC Accelerator SX board for higher MS-DOS and MS-Windows performance; and the SunPC Accelerator DX board for even greater performance for the most demanding floating-point and graphics-intensive applications. Sun is dumping its DOS Windows software emulator and SunIPC hardware-based emulator.The SunPC software is $695, the SX board is $1,500 and the DX board is $2,000, next week; Sun doesn’t say but they presumably use the 80486SX and full 80486 processors.
