Although Japanese companies have as yet made no impact in the massively parallel processing world, judging by the speed at which they pulled fuzzy logic out of the labs and applied it to improve consumer durables, in four or five years they will have stolen a lead on US and European companies. An indication that they are taking it seriously is that Fujitsu Ltd has reportedly developed a parallel processing circuit that combines 3-bit and 4-bit circuits to create a part that processes data 54 bits at a time. According to Newsbytes, it is fabricated in 0.8 micron CMOS, and beta sample chips are promised by the end of the year.
