Nottingham-based Proteon International Ltd is releasing the p4100 router for interconnecting Novell NetWare and TCP/IP based local area networks. Protean International – releasing the p4100 to cash in on an increase in the popularity of IEEE 802.5 Token Ring networks, and the need to connect them to the installed base of 802.3 Ethernet systems – also claims it connects to wide area networks and creates medium speed backbone networks. Each of the new Proteon routers is designed to connect up to four local or remote networks, and offers network interfaces for Ethernet 1.0, 2.0, IEEE 802.3 and the IEEE 802.5 for IBM Token Ring and ProNET 4 networks. When interfacing to wide area single lines, the router handles up to three ports and is configurable for RS-232, RS-448 or V.35 interfaces; the base unit is priced at UKP2,700, and interfaces are between UKP400 and UKP500.
