The top-end 2200 processor to succeed the ageing Sperry 1100/90 in the Unisys product line will be announced during the third quarter of this year according to Electronic News. Likely to be launched as the 2200/60, the new machine will use ECL gate arrays from Hitachi – and the Japanese company may be supplying full sub-assemblies in the same way Fujitsu does for Amdahl and ICL. It will initially come with one to four processors, the uniprocessor delivering 13 MIPS in its first incarnation, a full configuration rated at 42 MIPS. It is also expected to come with an optional integrated array processor for scientific work likely based on the one already offered with 1100/90s.
